History of Ashton
Ashton was created when the Oregon Short Line Railroad
decided to use an 1881 survey for the tracks to West Yellowstone. Ashton
was named for William Ashton who was the chief engineer of the Oregon
Short Line Railroad. On February 14, 1906 the residents had a huge party
celebrating the arrival of the railroad. When the village had 200 residents,
and requirements were satisfied, the Village of Ashton was incorporated
on July 11, 1906.
